“In-ká-hai” in the making

Making In-ká-hai
A number of years ago our intern, Chantal, was tasked with taking the Manjúi experience and crafting it into a story. The intent was not just to share a powerful testimony of frontline missionary work but to make a link between a tribal group and our friends and neighbours who live in a modern, urban setting. The lack of Bible knowledge among the Manjúi is echoed in our friends—their Bible illiteracy makes it hard for them to understand who Jesus is and what happened on the cross. There is so much we can learn from how the Bible teachers taught the Manjúi. That’s the essence of the book.

In the photo, the manuscript of “In-ká-hai” is laid out on two long tables on the right. Chantal is seated at her desk. John Cross and the Humphreys (who are featured in the book) are huddled together, going through the draft and making corrections.

“In-ká-hai” will be available Sep 23 on our web stores.

(Editor’s note: So often we find that people stay clear of the church simply because they don’t understand what the Bible is all about. But when there is understanding, there is life transformation.)

One of our staff had the opportunity to preach at church one Sunday morning. He chose John 1:29 as the key verse to speak on: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

“Do you know what that truly means?” he asked the congregation. “Here is John baptizing people in the waters of the Jordan, when all of a sudden, he stops and points to an approaching man. And he exclaims, ‘Behold the lamb of God!’ What a strange expression.”

Me no English!

All that the Prophets have Spoken (Arabic)

Editor’s note: In a world where migration is the norm, our ears may hear the sounds of a foreign language just down the street. Are we prepared to share the gospel in another language right in our neighbourhood? Here is one man’s story of how he did it.

During Easter, Jason* went for a walk around his neighbourhood. It wasn’t a casual stroll, however. Jason carried a bag loaded with tools that explained the gospel. He was on a journey to offer people in his community a chance to examine the Bible and learn its message.

At one house, he rang the bell and a lady answered the door. He smiled warmly at her but she studied him with narrowed eyes.

“Me no English,” she muttered.

“Oh,” said Jason. “What language do you speak?”

“Arabic.”

Nick Vujicic in Thailand

"By This Name" booklet

As an equipping ministry, our tools are often used by organizations around the world to give people an opportunity to understand the gospel message. Just last week, Nick Vujicic, from the organization Life Without Limbs, was in Thailand. Nick spoke at two events, one in Chiangmai and one in Bangkok. The ministry sponsoring Life Without Limbs decided to hand out our materials to the event attendees.

The attendees were given a booklet that contained the first two chapters of the Thai edition of By This Name. The booklet also included many testimonies of prominent Thai people who had read the book and were impacted by it. At the back of the booklet was information on how to get a copy of the book.

No one has ever given me a gift before!

(Editor’s note: We never know what God can do when we are faithfully looking for opportunities to give away the good news.)

After church service one Sunday morning, Kevin* met a young Chinese lady who had just arrived in the U.S. to attend university. They chatted for a few minutes and Kevin found out she was taking a course on environmental issues.

“I just happen to have a book on environmental issues that I think you’ll enjoy,” he said. “I’ll pass it to you next week.”

The Stranger Videobook

(Editor’s note: Many retired people have time on their hands. How can they use their time to be effective ambassadors for Christ? Here is Kevin and Seana’s story.)

We met an elderly couple who had recently ordered two cases of The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus. Kevin and Seana* were retired, but they were putting their time to good use by getting involved in a ministry that helped new international students settle into their city. Kevin and Seana helped the students find accommodation and get furniture. They showed the students around town, and even helped them find supermarkets that stocked familiar foods.

Thank you!

Building fund donation

Earlier in the year, we had a family of nine attend one of our TERM Seminars. Their children ranged from early teens to early 20s and they were very excited at the end of the seminar because they now felt equipped to share the gospel.

Just the other day, the family came by our office for a visit and surprised us when they presented an envelope for our building fund. The father told us they had pooled together what each had wanted to give. They all wanted to have a part in helping. We were very touched by this gesture and their generosity.

In the time since embarking on this building fund project, we have been moved by many of you who pray alongside with us or help us financially. We thank the Lord for each and every one of you. Would you please continue to pray that the Lord will work a miracle that will enable us to purchase the building.

We’ve been praying for nearly a year

"The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus" DVD

Here is a story from our archives. It’s from June* who works in a pregnancy resource centre.

We are a small Pregnancy Resource Centre and we’ve spent nearly a year praying for the right tool to use as a consistent, easy-to-understand, starting point in sharing the Bible with our clients. We have gospel bracelets that serve their purpose in the counselling rooms, but wanted something that would enable us to spend time with our clients and give us opportunity to build relationships.

To make a long (but interesting!) story short, the Lord led us to The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus about one and a half years ago. We’ve incorporated it into our “Points Program” by giving each client a book and workbook (and Bible if they don’t have one). We run group Bible study classes at our centre where we watch The Stranger DVD and discuss questions and answers in the workbook for two hours each week. We do this over a nine-week period. Typically, we run two Bible study sessions a day!

So again I say thank you. “The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus” has been an answer to our prayers!

As June discovered, we designed our tools so that any believer can use them to share the gospel. We are happy that June and her team were able to make good use of the book, workbook and the videobook.
