The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus gives a solid overview of the main message of the Bible. It ties together key Old and New Testament stories to reveal the identity of God and the nature of sin, all the time answering two questions: “Who is Jesus?” and “What is the story of the cross and the tomb all about?” It helps a person understand clearly the main message of Bible.
“The Bible makes so much sense now!"
This book is ideal for people who come from a Christianized background, whether Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox. It assumes readers have a concept of only one God who is a person, not a force.
Based on the gospel of John: Uses the gospel of John as a template; at the same time, provides necessary background stories to give the gospel context. It assumes the reader knows very little, if anything, about the Bible.
Chronological: Begins with the creation of the universe, and then progressing sequentially through key Old Testament stories, it moves into the New Testament to reveal the meaning of the cross and the tomb. The main story of the Bible is tied together into one universal, all-encompassing drama.
Peels religious tradition off the Bible: Introduces readers to the Bible without the trappings of religion.
Objective: Allows the Bible to speak for itself in presenting the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no arm-twisting to believe. The message is presented objectively; the decision to believe or not to believe is left to the reader.
Bible verses: Told as a story, weaving 1177 Bible verses throughout the narrative. The reader engages with the text of the Bible for himself.
Illustrated: Uses over 100 drawings, maps and diagrams to help explain the story.

Outstanding book - great for all levels!!!
I cannot compliment the author enough on what an excellent book this is!!!
The book manages to explain the primary message of the Bible in lucid, well-explained layman's terms, which allows an introductory level Bible reader to easily comprehend the message, yet is also still a great read for one who is quite well versed in Scripture.
I've read a number of publications that either assume the reader has a firm grasp on the Bible (causing frustration and gaps in their understanding/grasp of the true message), or others that presume that the reader is void of all understanding and common sense/knowledge (causing the reader to feel offended and affronted.)
Kudos to the author for giving us all a great resource for further delving into such a significant subject!!!

Awesome book to facilitate in depth evangelism!!
For years, I had hoped to find a book like this to pass on to friends. It explains the major themes of the Bible in an easy to understand format and shows how the whole Bible points to our need for a savior, the one and only, Jesus Christ. I am currently using this book along with the DVD series (which is almost word for word out of the book) to share the gospel with unsaved friends in my home on a weekly basis. I feel so blessed to have this amazing resource and I highly recommend it. I believe that every Christian who is serious about evangelism should own several copies!!!! I think the best approach is to get people to commit to coming to your home for a weekly study with the DVD. But for people who won't come to a study, the book can provide a simple yet in depth look into Christianity which is hard to provide during casual evangelism. This is also a great book for new Christians or Christians who are not well grounded in the truth of scripture. I also highly recommend The Lamb by the same author. It is basically the children's version of this book.

Allows people with a semi-religious background to genuinely understand how to receive Christ as Savior
WOW! We've had 8 people receive Christ at our church recently; 5 of those salvation decisions have come from an understanding of God's plan of salvation after reading through "The Stranger" book. We buy these books by the case because our church has found them to be the most effective evangelism tool for Bible study for people in our area.

If the Bible were a puzzle, this book clearly puts all the pieces together
I thank God that I came across this book. It has the air of one of those “For Dummies” books, e.g., “The Bible and the Gospel for Dummies,” though that title would do the book injustice. It linked everything in the Bible from the Old Testament and New Testament to why Jesus came to die for our sins. Simply put, it just makes the Bible SO clear. Reading this book made my heart smile at times. I was already in Christ before reading this book, but it did help me to understand things I had not yet fully grasp.

An excellent course for non / new Christians - and all those who want to know more
My husband and I ran this course after our involvement with running another well known Christian course for our previous church. Our group from the previous course wanted a better knowledge and understanding than they had received about who Jesus is. Six of us took part - (my husband and I (Christians for 7 years), our daughter (Christian for one year), one person who’d been a Christian for many years but wanted to know more, one person who’d become a Christian at the end of the last course, but had little knowledge of the bible, and one person who thought he was a Christian until the last course where he realised he wasn’t! He had a big stumbling block about Jesus and about suffering his wife endured before she died.) We ran each section and then went through the questions together and discussed issues as they arose where relevant and put aside those that we knew would be covered later.
By the end of the course (last week) all participants said how much they enjoyed the course and how much more informative it was than the previous Christian course we’d run. All of them now want to continue with the group and do some specific bible study. The man who’d had the stumbling blocks now finds that he understands the Gospel and we pray that he will give his life to the Lord very soon. I would highly recommend this course. It takes a lot of the pressure off if you feel inadequate as a leader!

Great book
This is a great book with solid teaching. Would be a good book for a new Christian to read or in a small group study with those seeking to understand more about the Christian faith. It would also be a good book for someone who has been a Christian for a long time who has not spent much time reading through the bible or maybe just needs a better understanding of how it all fits together.

Clear, Concise, and AMAZING
If you are reading this review I encourage you to purchase this book. I've been a Christian for 11 years and this is by far the best book you will read that clearly illustrates the message of the Bible. You will finish reading and will totally understand God's plan from beginning to end. I absolutely LOVE THIS BOOK and I have purchased MANY COPIES and have given this out during Christmas to believers and non-believers (I'd recommend "By This Name" for non-believers).
It's also a great tool to use in order to help you to explain the gospel to others. I'm still working on doing just that and I am happy to have a resource like "The Stranger" to turn to! PLEASE don't hesitate... It's a page turner for new and seasoned Christians! God Bless You

It all fits together!
I agree with the other comments. This book is very good. I used the book with my 14 year old to help him develop his views on what he believes. It makes so much sense. I am a firm believer that a book should be read from front cover to back cover. The first time I read the Bible through for myself, it made more sense to me. I appreciate this book and also hope to be able to give many out for friends and family to read. Thank you for writing it!

Everyone should read it
This book puts life and the way we live, into perspective in such an uncomplicated and yet deeply profound way, that I believe I was seriously blessed by it. Lots of books of a similar nature tend to be a bit “wiffly waffly” but this book was to the point and didn’t feel at all like it was forcing the Bible down your throat which a lot of other books do come across as doing. Easy reading and a really powerful message for believers and non-believers alike. Highly recommend it but read with an open mind. Don’t expect anything from it when you first start reading.

Good news for a dear friend
I gave a copy to a dear friend who is about 90 and has a hard time reading. He absolutely loves this large print Stranger book and he was amazed that it has pictures!

Treadmill Reading!
I love this book (Large Print edition). I read this giant print edition while walking on the treadmill and I don't want to stop even when my session is up! I'm so grateful for your resources, the simple truth of God's word so clearly put forth!

Great tool for every Christian, young, old and everything in between
I was very pleased reading this great book. Al last, it seems possible to write a book that provides enough basic knowledge without losing yourself in denominational and/or dogmatic issues. The respect and love for God and his Word are coming on to you from every page of this book. Also written with lots of respect for people with different opinions. A great tool for personal study or studies in groups. Honestly, I can’t wait till its translated in Dutch! Are there any plans? I would love to have a share in a Dutch translation project.

Using Stranger on the Road with kids
My husband is leading a class in our church using the Stranger on the Road videos.
In the evenings I has been showing Stranger on the Road to our 2 daughters, ages 11 & 9.
I have shown them the videos from the beginning and we do the questions in the book together. What I have found is that by doing the questions with them, the girls understand what is taught on the videos and it allows us to discuss the particular topic of the video which adds clarity. This video series that I have done with my daughters has been absolutely excellent! Showing the video series is a must with your young and older children.
I have found that their understanding, excitement and Biblical knowledge, while doing Stranger on the Road, has grown as we have gone along. They are sad that it is almost over and have asked if there is anymore videos that we can do.

Outstanding Biblical Overview and Teaching Tool
This book and the DVD series and workbook that accompany it is by far the best, most clearly stated overview of the Bible I’ve seen. It is an excellent foundational base that can be used with new Christians, mature Christians, and non-Christians. I used it to start a neighborhood ladies’ Bible study with ladies from several different faiths. It was so well-received that once we finished it, we were then able to start studying one of the books of the Bible (Mark). John Cross, the narrator/teacher in the DVD, is so easy to understand and makes the truths of God’s Word so clear. I highly recommend this for use by an individual, small group, or large group, or anyone seeking to understand the Bible as a whole.

Clearly Teaches Real Biblical Truth
I have been a chaplain in a high security prison here in the UK for 12 years. I have tried in vain to find a course which will adequately and clearly teach the real biblical truths necessary for a proper understanding of the gospel. I have been using “The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus Course” now for 2 years and praise the Lord for the work he has done through these studies.
Men who have no knowledge of the Bible come to a clear understanding of the true gospel and others who already have a knowledge of the Bible come to see truth much more clearly. Many men have come to genuine saving faith in Christ through the teaching of the course here in the prison. I will never forget the day when the Lord moved in an unusual way. John was teaching the transfer of righteousness through the death of Christ and illustrating it with the use of different coloured cloaks. As the truth was explained, one by one each of the 12 men in the room began to weep as the deep personal significance of the death of Christ sunk in. Several of those men have made clear professions of faith in the Lord Jesus and they continue until this day. I can highly recommend the course and pray many more will see the Lord’s hand at work the way I have here.

A Clear, Accurate, Practical explanation of the gospel of grace using simple Biblical language
In an era of media sound bites, fast food meals, and microwave popcorn, this Bible study is refreshing in its depth. I was first given the Stranger book about 5 years ago after being a Christian for 10 years—I loved it so much that I read it twice in a month (the material can’t be over-studied). The book was an amazing panoramic view of the gospel message weaved into each story of the Bible and clearly explained by John Cross in simple non-theological terms using many graphic illustrations familiar to most audiences. The book changed how I share the gospel with the lost and really helped me to better express the gospel using Biblical stories and terms in my personal witnessing. I bought the audio book for my wife and she lent it to her father who claimed to be a Christian for years (he honestly thought he was “born again”). After listening to the Stranger audio book he understood the FINISHED work of Christ for the first time and trusted Christ as his personal savior apart from religious ritual or an external response (i.e., saying a prayer, joining a church, being water baptized).
My review seems weak for the DVD study, but the DVD study is my favorite because the story is brought alive with physical representations (i.e., the tabernacle, branches, coin, visit to the Dead Sea, etc.). I have 3 copies in order to do the study in my home and with people at work during lunch (my father-in-law also has a copy). The Stranger is NOT new truth, but it is a revolutionary way to bring out those old truths so clearly seen in the scriptures. Purchasing the Stranger DVD is one of my best investments next to my own personal Bible. I have shared it with Bible study teachers and pastors that were blessed by the clarity of the teaching which always glorifies God.

Great for Home Devotions
I'm currently using this video as a home devotion with my wife and 2 girls. We do one video a day M-F and answer the questions. My favorite chapter is 'Filthy Rags'. I think it leaves out some important topics (God's sovereignty in all things), but is an excellent presentation for clarifying the Gospel and that we cannot save ourselves. It left out the particular sin of Noah and Moses as mentioned in the Bible but all details cannot be discussed. One uncomfortable chapter with the family labored the fornication aspect of Commandment 7 (our girls are 10-12 we should have reviewed that chapter first). I bought this for my parents (who attend a Catholic Church) and are watching it. Praise God!

Tremendous biblical tool for discipling
I used this video set with small groups with Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, and others and found it biblically sound and clearly instructional. The Spirit used it in a wonderful way. Discussions came easy from hungry hearts. Good for seekers and Christians at any maturity level.

Wonderful Teaching Tool
I sent this DVD set to my sister who is seeking, but has very little knowledge of the Bible. I also used this series with my four children and loved it. We are also going to use this series at church. This clear and visual message strengthened my faith and increased my knowledge when sharing with others. Highly recommend!

Enlightened while at sea (Part 1)
(From a Filipino brother in Christ, on board a container ship currently in the China Sea.) Last night I invited one of my crewmates to begin watching the “Stranger on the Road to Emmaus” Video Course with me and - praise God! - he was enlightened by the explanations of John Cross. This is just the beginning of my sharing with him. Please include him in your prayers.

Enlightened while at sea (Part 2)
(From an Indian brother in Christ who just completed his contract as the first engineer on an oil tanker and who is now back home in West Bengal.)
Here I am just finishing sharing "The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus" DVD course with my friend. The course is excellent and we are blessed with these (GoodSeed) resources. I am planning to call other friends and young pastors because I believe they too will be blessed.
